Capcom doesn't believe Wii U is a true next-gen console

Is the Wii U just a current-gen system with a fancy controller? Capcom seems to think so.

Capcom has released their annual report which discusses the current state of the gaming industry and the company's future plans. They have made it clear they want to have smaller teams focus on making more titles, rather than having massive teams develop big titles with prolonged development periods and big budgets. While this is certainly interesting, what they said about the Wii U has raised a few eyebrows.

"Although Nintendo will release the new game console Wii U and the market will be continue to be invigorated by the increase of DLC, time is required before the next generation console begins in earnest."

Many have commented that the Wii U seems to be more like Sony and Microsoft's current-gen consoles rather than the first of new generation, and it appears Capcom believes so as well. This is certainly reminiscent of the Wii's predicament, but hopefully third-party developers will show more support this time around, rather than releasing a few gems every now and then, along with a ton of half-hearted efforts and shovelware. As was the case with Nintendo's last system, the unique experiences made possible by the new controller will likely be what makes or breaks the console.
