Rayman Legends Challenges App now available on Wii U eShop

Playing Murfy's Dungeon level of Rayman Legends Challenges App on Wii U GamePad and TV.

The Rayman Legends Challenges App is now available to download from the Wii U eShop in North America and Europe. New challenges will be added daily and weekly until the full game hits store shelves later this year. It supports single-player and co-op, along with leaderboards.

Here's an excerpt from the press release:

April 25th, 2013 — Today, Ubisoft announced that Nintendo Wii U™ owners can now download the Rayman Legends Challenges application on the Nintendo e-Shop for free. Players will be able to experience the Online Challenges Mode through the release of the complete Rayman Legends game. Rayman Legends will be available on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Nintendo Wii U™ on August 30th.

The Wii U exclusive Online Challenges App is a totally free application containing the Online Challenges Mode of Rayman Legends. In this game mode players will find updated Daily and Weekly Challenges to compete online with their friends and players from all around the world!

The Online Challenges Mode includes:
-A crazy run through the Land of the Livid Dead,
- Dizzying descent into the Neverending Pit,
- A fast and frantic sprint through the Infinite Tower,
- A synchronized adventure through Murfy’s Dungeon, a challenge dedicated to the Wii U GamePad where one player controls as Murfy on the touch screen while another controls one of the classic characters such as Rayman.

There's more good news as well: Ubisoft has announced that Rayman Legends will released slightly earlier than expected. It will be available in Europe on August 30th, and in North America on September 3rd, two weeks before the release dates given earlier.

While the Wii U version's release was delayed to coincide with the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, it sounds like the wait will be worth it. The development team has taken advantage of the extra time and added 30 levels to extend the game, and several new bosses will appear as well.

Ubisoft on Rayman Legends NFC trailer, Beyond Good & Evil 2

A glimpse at how Rayman Legends might have used the GamePad's NFC capabilities.

Ubisoft managing director Xavier Poix recently spoke with IGN about a few of the company's biggest titles. He had a few interesting comments about Rayman Legends, specifically the leaked trailer which showed some of the ideas the development team had in mind for the GamePad's NFC functionality.
“We’ve always tried to create the best experience we could in every generation of Rayman. It’s a game and a franchise that can appeal to you, as an older gamer, or an even older audience, but also appeal to smaller children. When Wii U announced the NFC reader, we thought about that. I can’t disclose any more on this, but what has leaked is something we were thinking about.”
Poix then addressed Beyond Good & Evil 2, which was announced years ago but hasn't been discussed much by Ubisoft since. Poix says that Michel Ancel has been focused primarily on Rayman in recent years, which has delayed progress on the sequel to the critically acclaimed game.
“Michel is like 300 people. Each of them is doing something. If Beyond Good & Evil 2 is made at some point, then Michel will have to focus those 300 people on that one thing. Today it’s Rayman Legends. We’ll see. But of course that’s something that we have. It’s one of those rare games where, each time I have the opportunity to speak with gamers or the press, we talk about that. There’s something magical about this game. It’s always on our mind, what we could do with it. But there’s nothing to say right now.”

Ubisoft says Rayman Legends will improve as a result of delay

Screenshot of Rayman Legends Online Challenge Mode

Ubisoft has taken a lot of criticism for their decision to delay the Wii U version of Rayman Legends, but Ubisoft CEO Yves Guilemot says that the game will turn out even better as a result. In an interview with Kotaku, Guilemot revealed that the development team is still working on the version destined for Nintendo's console, and it is improving as the days go by.

“The Wii U the team is working hard on the Wii U [version] to make sure it continues to improve, so it can become one of the best Wii U games. We hope it can be one of the top games Ubisoft creates.”

“What’s very important to consider is that, when a team has more time, they are able to continue to improve the quality of the game. When we saw we had more time, we saw all of the possibilities. Some of the possibilities are the social features that we are seeing today, but also new bosses, new possibilities that will take the game to a level that people will love.”

Rayman Legends development team protests delay

Michael Ancel and the Rayman Legends development team protesting the game's delay

Last week, Ubisoft announced that Rayman Legends was no longer a Wii U exclusive, and would be ported to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. They also revealed that the Wii U version of the game was already finished but would not be released until September, when the other ports are ready to be shipped as well. That didn't sit well with many Nintendo fans, and there has been quite an uproar.

As it turns out, Rayman creator Michael Ancel is also upset about the delay, and photos have now appeared which show him, along with the rest of the development team, protesting the delay. In the photo seen above, the banner reads "Release Rayman. Support Ubisoft Montpelier" in French, while the limbless hero can be seen saying "please."

Ubisoft has not issued any sort of response to the photos at this time.

Rayman Legends delayed, no longer a Wii U exclusive

Rayman Legends screenshot, Jungle Level

Ubisoft has announced that Rayman Legends is no longer a Wii U exclusive and will be released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in addition to Nintendo's new console. The game was scheduled for release in less than a month, but the company has pushed the release date back to September 2013 for all three versions.

Ubisoft Montpellier, the development studio behind the Wii U version, will be working on all three versions themselves. Here's an excerpt from the press release on why the game is no longer exclusive to the Wii U.

“We heard from many Xbox & Playstation owners and Rayman fans who told us they really wanted to play Rayman Legends on their current system”, says Geoffroy Sardin EMEA Chief Marketing & Sales Officer at Ubisoft. ”We decided to give the fans what they wanted while at the same time broadening the audience exposed to this innovative and memorable game.”

Many aspects of Rayman Legends were designed around the Wii U GamePad, such as five-player multiplayer and touchscreen controls in some levels. Ubisoft has made no mention of how the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions will differ from the Wii U version. You can watch 23 minutes of gameplay footage after the break.

Rayman Legends dev praises Wii U

Rayman Legends screenshot, Jungle Level

Rayman creator Michel Ancel has been praising the Wii U from the start, and he continues to speak positively about the console. In an interview with GamesTM, Ancel said that the hardware is powerful and revealed that his team has not encountered any limitations during the development of Rayman Legends. They have been taking advantage of the system's capabilities to create some truly gorgeous visuals.

“The hardware is powerful and we haven’t had any limitations. Visually, because we’ve had more time with the UbiArt engine, we were able to add a lot of depth to the graphics. You can especially see it in the backgrounds. There are more layers, more details; it feels more like a landscape. We’ve also done a lot with the lighting effects, both in gameplay and graphics.” -Michael Ancel

Rayman Legends is scheduled for release in North America on February 26. It will be available in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe on March 1. The demo is already available for download from the eShop. You can watch 23 minutes of gameplay footage after the break.

Here's are a few excerpts from the press release.

Rayman Legends takes full advantage of the innovative Wii U(TM) controller to explore fresh multiplayer gameplay experiences and expand beyond the traditional platformer genre. The Wii U(TM) controller also allows you to continue the adventure of Rayman and his friends on the controller screen even while the TV is off.

The game retains the fantasy appeal of its predecessor while adding a multitude of clever and entertaining gaming modes, new characters, new environments and a new soundtrack. Rayman Legends dev believes Wii U NFC could be used in innovative ways

One of the GamePad's most-hyped features has been neglected by third-parties and Nintendo themselves.

The Wii U GamePad features near field communication abilities, but so far none of the games announced for the console make use of it. A few months ago, a video was leaked which showed NFC being used in Rayman Legends, but the game's creative director Michel Ancel has told Official Nintendo Magazine that it was merely an experiment.

“We didn’t announce this officially and it was more the kind of experiment we do when working on new hardware like the Wii U. We had prototypes of this and we believe that having real objects manipulating gameplay could be quite innovative. But again, this was a prototype and we won’t discuss it until it’s ready to demonstrate its full potential.”

You can read the full interview in the latest issue of Official Nintendo Magazine.
