Call of Duty: Ghosts - Wii U overview

Box art for Wii U version of Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: Ghosts was released on November 5th for almost all platforms including the Wii U, and has received mixed but generally positive reviews. As of this writing, the Xbox 360 version currently has a Metacritic score of 74 out of 100, and the PS3 version has an average of 76. As with many multiplatform titles, Metacritic doesn't have a single review specifically for the Wii U version.

For those of you thinking about picking it up for Nintendo's console, here's an overview of what it's missing, as well as what it has that the others don't, courtesy of the user reviews on Amazon:

  • Missing bonus map and DLC (Activision may port it depending on sales)
  • No clan registry
  • Supports Off-TV Play
  • Local co-op with a dedicated screen for each player (one uses TV, other uses GamePad)
  • Wii Remote and Nunchuk support
  • Smaller community of users than other platforms

The user reviews say that the graphics are on par with the current-gen systems (360 and PS3) and that it's pretty much the same game except without the DLC and clan registry. They are advising gamers to do their homework before making a purchase and I would too, especially since there doesn't seem to be any guarantee that the DLC will see a release on the Wii U. You can read some user reviews via the source link below.

Nintendo confirms Call of Duty: Ghosts is coming to Wii U

Screenshot of Call of Duty: Ghosts with soldier in tall grass and helicopter in the distance

Call of Duty: Ghosts was announced a few months ago, but there have been a number of conflicting statements as to whether or not it would be coming to the Wii U. Not even publisher Activision seemed to know.

It looks as though we finally have an answer. Nintendo of America themselves have confirmed via Twitter that the blockbuster title is coming to their new console, complete with an image of the box art.

Activision announces Call of Duty: Ghosts, no confirmation of Wii U version

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be shown live during the unveiling of the next-gen Xbox

Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Ghosts, this year's entry in the extremely popular series. A live-action teaser trailer has been released which says a live demonstration will be held during the unveiling of the next generation Xbox on May 21st. A press release issued by the company has confirmed it is in development for the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, PS4, and "next gen platforms." Due to the wording, it is unclear if "next gen platforms" includes the Wii U, and retailers are not taking pre-orders for the game on the system.

And yet, it appears that it may be coming after all. When asked by The Examiner if the game is coming to Nintendo's console, an Activision representative gave the following reply:

We don’t have any news for the Wii U at this time, as we aren’t dating next generation platforms yet. Stay tuned.
-Activision representative

While many have debated the status of the Big N's console as a "next generation platform," it looks as though Activision is referring to it as such. It's also worth noting that box art for a Wii U version of Call of Duty: Ghosts was spotted on a Spanish retailer's website a few days ago before being removed after attracting attention. We'll keep you posted. Teaser trailer after the break.

Rumor - Call of Duty: Ghosts coming to Wii U

Box art for Wii U version of Call of Duty: Ghosts

Activision is preparing to announce this year's entry in the Call of Duty series, but details have been scarce so far. However, it appears that one Spanish retailer has revealed a few details already.

According to the game's listing on XtraLife (which has been removed), Call of Duty: Ghosts will use a new game engine and will arrive on multiple platforms, including the Wii U. In fact, the box art you see above was taken directly from the listing.

While this shouldn't be taken as confirmation that Ghosts is coming to Nintendo's new console, it does appear hopeful that Activision is going to continue to support the platform. Seeing as how the official announcement is expected this week, we'll know for sure soon enough.

Patch for Wii U version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 causing problems

Box art for Wii U version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

Update: 2/1/13 - A second patch has been released which addresses a number of issues and adds new functionality. You can check out the full release notes on the official Call of Duty forums here.

Original Story
Activision has released a patch for the Wii U version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 which is meant to bring it up to speed with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. Unfortunately, it's causing a few problems.
Wii U community manager A_Trey_U has acknowledged that there are issues, and posted the following message on the official Call of Duty forums:

Hello Wii U Community,

We are noticing some issues with the version of the patch that was posted that you guys are also reporting here on the forums. We are working with Nintendo on a resolution to this problem and hope to know more at some point tomorrow. I will keep you posted as I receive more information.

We are aware that some of the menu listings from the 360′s Revolution DLC drop are showing up in the game. This is not a confirmation of DLC for the Wii U, just a versioning problem that we are working to address.

I do not want to publish the list of known fixes until I have confirmation that they are all live. I hope to be able to do this tomorrow, but as I mentioned, this is something we are working on with Nintendo, so the timeline isn’t entirely in our hands.

Thank you for understanding.

Wii U version of Black Ops 2 has lower framerate than Xbox 360, PS3 versions

Comparison of Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
The framerate chugs at times.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has been getting great reviews, but the media have been focused primarily on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC versions as they were released five days before the launch of the Wii U. Eurogamer has put together a lengthy Black Ops 2 comparison article for the Wii U/Xbox 360/PS3 versions of the game, and while they say the Wii U version is a solid port for the most part, they reported that the framerate does slow down in certain parts of the game.

The Wii U version matches the look of the Xbox 360 game and thus gives it an edge visually over the PlayStation 3 release, but unfortunately it comes up well short in terms of performance - an aspect that is all-important to the playability of a COD title. The frame-rate variance is such that the PS3 game feels generally smoother, while the 360 release feels like an entirely different game in the more demanding levels. Bearing in mind the commonalities in hardware design between Wii U and Xbox 360, we can't help but feel somewhat disappointed that Black Ops 2 under-performs so noticeably.

Eurogamer says the multiplayer portion of the game holds up pretty well, and they also praised the ability to play the game on the GamePad.

Still, on the plus side, the multiplayer component of the game has emerged unscathed - if that's your focus, and you're willing to be patient for the online audience to grow in number, Black Ops 2 on Wii U is still worthy of consideration. The game also illustrates rather nicely the application of the GamePad for a new form of split-screen gaming, while tablet mirroring really is a sweet feature that we hope more developers embrace.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 - Video Review by IGN

Fallen turbine tower in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has officially launched. Some retailers have already begun shipping the Wii U version out to those who pre-ordered, but since the console doesn't actually launch until Sunday, they obviously won't be able to play it yet. IGN has posted their video review of the game, and the verdict is pretty much what you'd expect. Keep in mind, though, Activision still hasn't made an official statement as to what sort of DLC will be available for the Wii U version, and the Call of Duty Elite service will not be available at launch. Video review after the break.

Many different levels are shown, including Nuketown 2025. Still no official confirmation the map will come to Wii U.

The staff of Giant Bomb picked up a copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and recorded almost an hour of multiplayer gameplay footage. As they run around battling random people on Xbox Live, they give some commentary to try and make things more entertaining. They kick things off with a match in Nuketown 2025, the pre-order bonus map that everyone seems to want. Still no official word from Activision as to whether or not the map will find its way to the Wii U. Video after the break.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 - LG Cinema 3D trailer

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 - LG Cinema 3D trailer screenshot

Here's a new trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. This video touts the game's 3D mode, but unless we hear otherwise, it seems very unlikely the Wii U version will support 3D. Either way, there's some new material that hasn't been seen yet, so it's worth a look. Video after the break.

Call of Duty Elite won't be available for Wii U version of Black Ops 2 at launch

Call of Duty Elite screenshot
Will the service support the Wii U version?

Activision recently announced that Call of Duty Elite services will be free for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, but it appears that Wii U owners won't be getting in on the deal, at least not at launch. Here's what the company had to say to Kotaku about the matter:

“We are currently evaluating options for Call of Duty Elite to support Nintendo’s Wii U game system, however Call of Duty Elite for Call of Duty: Black Ops II will not support this platform when the game launches on November 13th.”

Black Ops 2 taking Call of Duty Multiplayer to the next level

Screenshot of Cargo Flag Rush in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
So many options, so many modes.

Developer Treyarch has a somewhat dubious reputation as their entries in the popular Call of Duty series have consistently received mixed receptions from critics and gamers alike. It appears that they are about to redeem themselves, as the company is going all out with the multiplayer portion of Black Ops 2. Class customization and skill-based league play are just the tip of the iceberg, evidenced by the fact that the game's Zombie Mode is so massive it has a story of its own. Michael McWhertor of The Verge has written up a lengthy article which details just about everything the title's multiplayer has to offer. You can check it out via the link below.

Some gamers upset that Wii U version of Black Ops 2 reportedly runs in full HD while others won't

Yemen mission in Call of Duty Black Ops 2
Wii U will have the best-looking console version.

There has been some outcry from "hardcore" gamers over the fact that the Wii U version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 reportedly runs in 1080p on the Wii U with a solid framerate of 60 fps while the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will not. Rich of Tech Review USA has uploaded a video to YouTube sharing his thoughts on the controversy. You can watch it after the break.

Gameplay demo of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on Wii U

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on Wii U
Each player has their own screen, runs in HD at 60 frames per second.

Here is the official announcement and gameplay demo of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 at Nintendo's press conference. The presentation reveals how the GamePad enhances the experience, allowing one player to play entirely on the controller's touchscreen while maintaining a steady framerate of 60 fps. It was also confirmed that the title will support the Wii Remote and Nunchuk as one of the control methods, so if you're preparing to sell your Wii to get some cash to help pay for the new console, I'd recommend you hold on to your old controllers.
