The Cave is now available on the Wii U eShop in North America. It is priced at $14.99. Here's a short description of the game from director Ron Gilbert himself.

The story is about a sentient talking cave that draws people to it so they can enter and hopefully discover something about themselves. Of course, we should all be careful what we ask about ourselves. We might not like what we find.

The staff of Giant Bomb recently got together with a few members of developer Double Fine and took a look at the game. Ron Gilbert was present and he had quite a lot to say about the gameplay and puzzles featured in his latest creation. You can check out the video after the break.

Wii U version of The Cave uses GamePad to control camera, looks "identical" to other versions

Screenshot of Wii U eShop game The Cave

Joystiq reports that the Wii U version of The Cave will use the GamePad's touchscreen for switching characters and controlling the camera. If you tap on a character once, you will "jump to them," while double tapping a character will switch the camera focus to them. It should be noted that characters cannot move independently off-screen.

Chris Remo, community manager and writer at Double Fine Productions, told Joystiq that aside from these unique features, it plays like the other versions and "looks identical" to them.

“So other than that, it pretty much plays like all the other versions. We did work really hard to ensure that visually everything you’re seeing is identical to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, so there’s no downscaling, there’s nothing going on that is not up to par with the other next-gen systems. There’s nothing super wacky going on, but it’s a completely full-featured version of the game.”

The Cave is scheduled for release in January of 2013.

The Cave - Character Trailer #1

The Hillbilly and the Monk in the video game The Cave

Developer Double Fine has released a new trailer for their upcoming platformer The Cave, which is coming to the Wii U eShop in early 2013. The video shows each of the playable characters, and gives a little background story for each of them. I had assumed the game was meant primarily for children, but judging from the Teen rating and the somewhat dark tone of this trailer, it looks like it will be aiming for a slightly more mature audience. Ron Gilbert gives new details about The Cave

Screenshot of Wii U eShop game The Cave

The Cave was announced to be in development for the Wii U a few months ago and will be available on the Wii U eShop. Game director Ron Gilbert recently participated in a reader Q and A session about the platformer, revealing a few details about the story and gameplay. Here are a few excerpts.

I see that [The Cave] will have dragons and a climate medieval, but at the same time with technology and soda machines. What is the storyline of the game?
Ron Gilbert: The story is about a sentient talking cave that draws people to it so they can enter and hopefully discover something about themselves. Of course, we should all be careful what we ask about ourselves. We might not like what we find. As to why there is soda machines and dragons in the same game? Prove they didn’t exist at the same time. Exactly.

How did the concept for this game come about?
Ron Gilbert: It’s an idea I’ve had for going on 25 years and predates Maniac Mansion. The original idea was about three explorers that find this odd cave and go inside and learn some dark things about who they are. Over the years I’ve slowly worked on the story and I’ve always wanted to revisit choosing three characters from a group of seven like I did in Maniac Mansion.

We’ve heard a bit about the character of the Timer Traveler — did you always know you wanted to incorporate ‘time’ as a way to deal with puzzles, and did that open up other avenues in the game design?
Ron Gilbert: I wanted to have The Time Traveler just because I thought it would be fun to have a time traveler. Once we start designing the game it became clear we need to play with her ability to travel in time. When you play her, you get to travel to the prehistoric past and into the far future and explore how the causality of time really works.

The Cave will be released on the Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in "early 2013." If you want to read the Q & A session in its entirety, you may do so via the source link below.

Video interview about The Cave, with gameplay footage

Screenshot of The Cave, video game

Developer Double Fine is working on a new platformer called The Cave, and it's coming to the Wii U eShop. The staff of Revision3 caught up with director Ron Gilbert and asked him to tell everyone what the game's about. Sega will be publishing said title, and it will be released sometime in 2013. Other supported platforms include the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. When it comes to third-party eShop support, things are certainly looking up for Nintendo's new console.  As time goes on, I think we can expect to hear a lot more titles announced for the system. You can check out the interview along with the trailer after the break.
