James Bond game developer Eurocom shuts down

Box art for Wii version of GoldenEye 007 and Wii U version of 007 Legends

Recently, Eurocom announced that they had reduced their number of employees from over 200 to just under 50 as a result of restructuring, and said they would be focusing primarily on mobile platforms. Now it appears the company is out of business altogether, as they have announced they have let their remaining staff go and are entering administration.

Eurocom has been around since the days of the NES, with many hits spanning a variety of platforms. They have made quite a few James Bond games over the years, including The World Is Not Enough, James Bond 007: Nightfire, Quantum of Solace (PS2 version only), GoldenEye 007 (Wii), GoldenEye 007: Reloaded (Xbox 360, PS3), and 007 Legends, which was released just a few weeks ago. All of their Bond games received great reviews, with 007 Legends being the only exception. 007 Legends was widely panned by critics, and Games Industry International reported that the title's quality may have suffered as a result of very tight deadlines set by publisher Activision, who wanted it to be in stores when the latest Bond film, Skyfall, was released.

If you would like to read a statement from Eurocom on the matter, you can do so via the source link below.

Wii U version of 007 Legends not coming to Australia, 3 other games delayed

Box art for Wii U version of 007 Legends

Here's some bad news for gamers in Australia. NBA 2K13, Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, and Marvel Avengers: The Battle for Earth have all been delayed and will not be available when the console launches in the region on Friday, November 30th. The new release dates are as follows:

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two - December 13th
Marvel Avengers: The Battle for Earth - December 13th
NBA 2K13 - "early next year"

While those three titles have merely been delayed for the platform, the Wii U version of 007 Legends has been cancelled and won't even be released in Australia. I've been looking at the comments sections on various websites and most gamers seem completely indifferent to the news that 007's latest game won't be available in the region, which is undoubtedly due to the fact that it received overwhelmingly negative reviews. The game did so poorly that developer Eurocom recently announced they were laying off over 200 employees and are shifting their focus to mobile platforms. It's a shame, really, as the company had developed a number of successful Bond games over the years, including James Bond 007: Nightfire and the reimagined version of GoldenEye 007 for the Wii. Eurocom suffers major job losses

Box art for Wii version of GoldenEye 007 and Wii U version of 007 Legends

Eurocom, the developer of the critically acclaimed Wii version of GoldenEye 007, as well as the recent Bond game 007 Legends, has reduced its number of employees from over 200 to just 50 as a result of restructuring. They will be focusing primarily on mobile platforms from now on. Eurocom Director Hugh Binns issued the following statement on the matter.

"Eurocom are undertaking a restructuring which I regret to say has meant we've made the majority of our workforce redundant today.

This includes many very experienced, talented and highly skilled employees, and we'd like to thank them all for your hard work and efforts.

We've fought to try and save as many jobs as possible, but the steep decline in demand for console games, culminating in a number of console projects falling through in the last week, left us with no option. Eurocom has retained a core staff of just under 50 employees and will be focusing mainly on mobile opportunities moving forward."

Eurocom has around since the days of the NES, with many hits spanning a variety of platforms. 007 Legends was widely panned by critics, and it has been reported that the title was victim of very tight deadlines set by publisher Activision, who wanted it to be in stores when the latest Bond film, Skyfall, was released.

007 Legends - Video Review by IGN

The game is based on 50 years of movie history. What happened?

This is very disappointing. I love James Bond. In fact, the N64 version of GoldenEye 007 is my favorite game of all time. When I heard 007 Legends was going to feature missions based on 5 of the films, I thought it sounded promising. When it was announced to be a Wii U launch window title, I became even more interested. The Xbox 360, PS3, and PC versions have just been released, and the reviews are slowly trickling out. Sadly, they are overwhelmingly negative, and unless the game undergoes a serious transformation on its way to Nintendo's console, it will not be worth the asking price. Being a huge Bond fan, I might consider picking it up for (very) cheap sometime down the road, but I think I'll have to pass for now.

IGN scored the game slightly lower than the other guys, but the consensus from professional critics and gamers alike is that it's a pretty poor effort. You can watch IGN's video review after the break.

007 Legends - Opening Credits and Trailers

One of the missions is based on Goldfinger.

Activision has released the opening credit cinematic for 007 Legends. The opening theme was written by David Arnold, and is essentially a remix of the theme from Goldfinger, one of the films on which the game is based. You can watch the video, along with all of the previous trailers, after the break.

007 Legends will feature mission based on Goldfinger

Goldfinger mission in 007 Legends
Straight from the movie.

Activision has been slowly leaking more and more info about their new Bond game, 007 Legends. They have now revealed that there will be a mission based on the classic film Goldfinger, and they have released a new trailer which showcases said mission. Here is the official press announcement:

In 007 Legends, the Goldfinger mission finds the best undercover agent early in his career investigating Auric Goldfinger – a gold magnate thought to be behind a recent spike in gold prices – only to discover a larger plot to irradiate the entire Fort Knox gold reserve.

In order to thwart the plot, Bond takes action to infiltrate Goldfinger’s headquarters with help from a questionable acquaintance – Pussy Galore. Upon arrival at Fort Knox, 007 is tasked with defusing a nuclear bomb before it detonates, and the only thing standing between Bond and the bomb is Goldfinger’s henchman – Oddjob – and his notoriously deadly hat. Will Bond be able to defeat Oddjob? Will Goldfinger’s evil plans succeed?

The other films the game will pay tribute to are Moonraker, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Licence to Kill, Die Another Day, and the upcoming Skyfall, which will begin playing in theaters in October. You can see all of the 007 Legends trailers after the break.

Nintendo's decision to cancel GoldenEye XBLA: bad for gamers, good for Nintendo?

by Steve

The game would have been available on Xbox Live Arcade, and the Wii's Virtual Console.

Everyone loves GoldenEye 007, and when it came to light that Rare was working on an enhanced version of the N64 classic, people were absolutely ecstatic. The screenshots that surfaced were amazing, and the leaked footage of the game running at 60 frames per second, the way it was meant to be played, was the stuff of dreams. According to many different sources, including actual members of Rare's staff, the project was all too real. As the story goes, Nintendo, Microsoft, Rare, and Activision, the current holders of the Bond license, had reached a joint agreement which would have allowed the game to be released on both Xbox Live Arcade and the Wii's Virtual Console. Unfortunately, just as the game was nearing release, Nintendo backed out and pretty much sabotaged the project, ensuring that no one would get to play it.

The 15th Anniversary of GoldenEye 007: A Retrospective

by Steve

Released in the US on 8/25/97

Today marks the 15th anniversary of the release of GoldenEye 007, one of the greatest games ever made, and my favorite game of all time. GoldenEye is the number one selling N64 game in the United States, outselling Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. On this historic day, I'd like to say a few words about this enduring icon of the industry.

Wii U version of 007 Legends hinted at

Amazon's French site has listed 007 Legends to the list of Wii U games available for preorder, indicating the game will very likely come to Nintendo's new platform. It has already been confirmed for Windows, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3. Given the similarities between the three home consoles in terms of tech specs and architecture, I'd say the development of a Wii U version is a given.

007 Legends is being developed by Eurocom and published by Activision. The game's release will coincide with 50th anniversary of the Bond film series, and will also coincide with the release of the latest Bond flick, Skyfall. Activision has revealed that the new title will incorporate the stories of six Bond films, although Daniel Craig's voice and likeness will be used throughout the entirety of the game. Eurocom is no stranger to the series, their previous 007 offerings include 007 Nightfire, the Playstation 2 version of Quantum of Solace, GoldenEye 007 for the Wii, as well the HD remastered version, GoldenEye 007: Reloaded, for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
