Until July 2013, Nintendo is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Famicom by releasing "classic" titles for the new Wii U Virtual Console. As an added bonus, you can get these games for 30 cents during the first 30 days of each title's release. This month's release is Super Metroid. Does this game still inspire 19 years after its release? Find out after the jump.

Club Nintendo refunds Coins to Wii U owners who downloaded Super Metroid

Screenshot of Super Metroid. Club Nintendo is currently offering the game for just 150 coins.

Last month, Club Nintendo offered the Wii Virtual Console version of Super Metroid for just 150 Coins. Many Wii U owners took advantage of the deal, but there was an issue: Super Metroid is scheduled for release on the Wii U Virtual Console on May 15th and will be priced at just 30 cents for 30 days. Nintendo has realized that the promotion was ill-timed and refunds are being issued to those who downloaded the game. Here's the message they're sending out:

Dear Club Nintendo Member,

Thank you for your recent order of Super Metroid from Club Nintendo. We're sending this notification to let you know this title will be available from the Nintendo eShop for Wii U for 30 cents, as part of a special promotion starting on May 15.

Because you are a Wii U owner, we have refunded the 150 Coins you redeemed for Super Metroid. You may still use the code you received to download the game for free to play on Wii or Wii U. We hope you enjoy your game, and visit Club Nintendo again soon.

It's always good to see a company thinking of their customers.

Club Nintendo offering Super Metroid for 150 coins

If you have a Wii U, you should probably wait until next month

Screenshot of Super Metroid. Club Nintendo is currently offering the game for just 150 coins.

The Wii Virtual Console version of the classic SNES game Super Metroid is currently available from Club Nintendo for just 150 coins. While this is certainly a good deal for Wii owners, if you have the Big N's latest console I would suggest you pass. Why's that? Because Super Metroid will be available on the Wii U Virtual Console next month and will be priced at just 30 cents for 30 days. You read that right, it is coming to the eShop on May 15th and will have restore points, allow players to create custom button layouts, and support Off-TV Play. I think those features are worth the wait.

That said, if you don't have a Wii U yet and aren't planning on buying one anytime soon, you might want to consider taking the deal. The offer expires on May 5th. You can check it out via the link below.

10 Year Anniversary of "Metroid Day"

by Jake

It is almost time to celebrate the 10th anniversary of what I have affectionately dubbed "Metroid Day."  On November 18th, 2002 Nintendo satisfied the appetites (which had long given way to pangs of hunger) of Metroid fans by releasing Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion on their relatively new consoles; The Gamecube and Gameboy Advance.

Miyamoto says Metroid Blast reflects his ideas for the series

Metroid Blast in Nintendo Land
A glimpse of the future?

In a recent interview with GameKult, Miyamoto was asked about the future of Metroid on Wii U and whether the next game will be made in the style of Metroid Prime, Metroid: Other M, or something else. His answer?

Miyamoto: "You know, the kind of ideas I have on Metroid are already reflected in the mini-game that is devoted to the series in Nintendo Land, Metroid Blast."

While some might think Miyamoto is hinting that Metroid Blast is a vision of things to come, that isn't necessarily the case. He did play a serious role in the early development stages of Metroid Prime, but others within Nintendo had more influence on that title as well its sequels. Also, Metroid: Other M was developed by Team Ninja with series co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto serving as producer. It will be interesting to see who is entrusted with the development of the next entry in the series and what sort of direction they decide to take it in.

Metroid attraction in Nintendo Land gets official name

Battle Mii has a new name. Image from last year's E3.
During E3 last year, Nintendo released a promotional video showing off the features of the GamePad via the mini-game compilation Nintendo Land. One of the minigames was titled Battle Mii, which was obviously based on the long-running Metroid series. Now, the big N has finally settled on an official name for the mini-game: "Metroid Blast." This information comes from the latest issue of Game Informer, which is focusing on Wii U games. Apparently someone got their hands on said issue and has posted scans of it in an online forum. The scans have since been taken down, most likely due to legal issues, but it appears the mini-game has been expanded quite a bit, as one screenshot has the words "tap here to return to story." You can see the story in its entirety in the newest issue of Game Informer.

Due to legal issues, Wii U Only won't be posting any of the leaked images...but who needs pictures when you have video! You can check out the staff of Nintendo World Report blasting each other after the break.
