Lego City: Undercover - Video Review by GameSpot

Chase McCain using Grapple Hook in Lego City: Undercover

Lego City: Undercover is scheduled for release in North America today, March 18th. The reviews have been very positive so far, and it looks like a solid game for Nintendo's new console.

Earlier this week, I posted IGN's video review of the Wii U exclusive, and they gave it a score of 8 out of 10. That seems to be the average, which is pretty good considering how few games score a 9 or higher. Kevin Vanord of GameSpot has weighed in on the open world title in his own video review, and he has plenty of good things to say about it. He does mention the long loading times, which have been reported by practically every reviewer, but he also says it's a minor annoyance that doesn't ruin the fun. You can watch his review after the break.

Wii U eShop version of Lego City: Undercover requires hard drive

Screenshot of Lego City: Undercover official website which says a hard drive is required to download the eShop version of the game

The Wii U doesn't have a whole lot of storage space, but fortunately, Nintendo made sure that gamers would be able to use external hard drives with the system. As it turns out, gamers who plan on buying the digital version of Lego City: Undercover are going to need one.

As you can see in the image above, the official website for the game has the following message posted under the "pre-order" information for the eShop version:

"An external hard drive is required to download this software. Visit support.nintendo.com for information about storage options."

Eurogamer is reporting that the Wii U exclusive is reportedly 22GB in size. When you consider the fact that the 32GB model of Nintendo's new console only provides about 25GB of usable storage space, it should come as no surprise that a hard drive is needed. The 8GB model of the console only has 3GB of usable storage space, so you'll definitely need a hard drive if you plan on going digital.

If Lego City: Undercover is, in fact, 22GB in size, downloading the title from the eShop could take quite a while, especially for those who have slower connections. Of course, these will only be issues for gamers who prefer digital copies over physical discs.

Lego City: Undercover - Video Review by IGN

Screenshot of LEGO City: Undercover for Wii U

TT Fusion's new game Lego City: Undercover puts players in the shoes of undercover cop Chase McCain as he chases down criminals and cleans up the streets of Lego City. Chase can perform wall jumps, do a number of acrobatic moves, put on disguises to use new abilities, and pilot a number of different vehicles including cars, trucks, and even helicopters. The GamePad is used to scan for criminals, display a map of the city, and much more. Nintendo is publishing it themselves, which means it will remain a Wii U exclusive.

The first reviews have been coming in over the past week and they are overwhelmingly positive. Rich George  of IGN has weighed in on the open world title, and while he doesn't think it's perfect, he still says it's great. Video review after the break.

Retailers Amazon, Best Buy, and Future Shop have updated their detail pages for Lego City: Undercover, and it appears that physical copies of the highly anticipated title may be affected by shipping delays. Amazon has the original release date of 3/18/13, but they have posted the following message:

Potential Shipping Delay
Delivery of Lego City: Undercover pre-orders may be affected by manufacturer shipping delays . Amazon apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.

Meanwhile, American retail chain Best Buy and Canadian electronics retailer Future Shop have simply changed the release date to 3/20/2013, a mere two days after the official release date provided by Nintendo. Hopefully the game will be available on time for most Wii U owners.

Lego City: Undercover receives impressive score from Game Informer review

Chase McCain on rooftop of building in Wii U version of Lego City: Undercover

Game Informer has published their review for Lego City: Undercover. It was written by Jeff Cork, who gave it an impressive 8.5 out of 10. Cork says the game is "one of the funniest games he's played in a while" and has "moderately high" replay value. The platforming is said to be a weak spot, but the review praises developer TT Fusion's use of the Wii U GamePad. Here is an excerpt:
It isn’t perfect, but I can’t think of another Wii U game that I’d recommend more than Lego City Undercover. It’s the most interesting and highly polished game in TT Games’ large repertoire, and it fills an important game gap. Now kids (and their parents) can tool around in a big town where people smile even as you almost run them over in an ice-cream truck.
-Game Informer’s Jeff Cork
Just a reminder - the game is scheduled for release in the U.S. on March 18th, and Europe on March 28th. Nintendo has uploaded a new TV commercial for the game to their YouTube channel. You can watch it after the break.

TT Fusion says playing through Lego City: Undercover could take 40-50 hours

Chase McCain using Grapple Hook in Lego City: Undercover

A few key members of TT Fusion, the developer behind Lego City: Undercover, recently spoke with Nintendo Life about the upcoming Wii U exclusive. According to executive producer Loz Doyle, it could take players 40-50 hours to complete everything the game has to offer.

There are so many vehicles, characters and missions. There’s so much content in the game already – you’re talking 40-50 hours to get 100%, it’s difficult to imagine what we could put in. We wouldn’t rule it out, but it’d have to be the right thing to fit with the rest of the game.

...Initially in the San Francisco area at the start of the game you’re really focused on the story, but as you get more abilities you’ll see things that had locked icons before that you couldn’t use, and now you can. That’ll encourage you to explore and use those different game mechanics and abilities.

Script writer Graham Goring added that the GamePad really brings a lot to the experience, and says the game just wouldn't be the same if played using a standard controller.

It’s one of the weird things. We’re developing on PC and there’d be things you’d do if you didn’t have a dev kit, but it wouldn’t have the life. For example with the audio scanning you’d just be using a thumbstick, but you’d do it on the GamePad and it’d feel great, like a revelation. That complete feedback, a window into the world, feels different and fresh. You could do some of the features on a standard controller, but it’d be a shadow of itself.

Lego City: Undercover dev says game would "lose something on other platforms"

Image of GamePad being used as scanner in Wii U version of Lego City: Undercover
In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, executive producer Loz Doyle said that he feels LEGO City Undercover is best for the Wii U and wouldn't really fit on another platform. Doyle cites the game's reliance on the GamePad as the reason, explaining that they decided to integrate its features very early on.

LEGO City Undercover would definitely lose something on other platforms. Chase is actually given a LEGO version of the GamePad as his Police Communicator, so it's really woven into the story.

We started with a massive array of ideas [for the GamePad] but in the end we focused on it being a police device. The map is really useful to have on at all times rather than in a small corner of the screen, plus you receive video calls from different characters.

The latest issue of Official Nintendo Magazine features an interview of LEGO City: Undercover executive producer Loz Doyle. He told the publication that the titular city is fairly large, revealing that it takes around 10 minutes to drive a loop of the city.

“It would take 10 minutes just to drive a loop of the city. That doesn’t even include exploring all the side roads and other regions. Not only is there the ground level city to explore but you can also get up on the rooftops where there is a whole load of additional gameplay.”

LEGO City Undercover takes place in an open world environment in which players take on the role of Chase McCain who drives around town taking down criminals as he tries to recapture Rex Fury, who managed to escape from prison. Trailer after the break.
