Capcom hints at more Mega Man games on Wii U Virtual Console

The first four games in the classic Mega Man series are now available on the Wii U Virtual Console, as well as Mega Man X, the first in the X series which was released on the SNES. They all feature Off-TV Play, Miiverse communities, and restore points, the latter of which will surely come in handy for those who struggle with the difficult retro titles.

The games must be selling well, as Brett Elston of Capcom has now hinted that there will be more of the Blue Bomber on the console in the near future. Here's an excerpt from a recent blog post:

Hope to have additional news regarding classic MM games hitting the Virtual Console soon. We're on a roll with the 3DS and Wii U lineup, and I have a feeling there's more on the way...

The second and third entries in the classic series are widely considered to be the best, and you should definitely consider picking them up if you're looking for something to play. You can watch some gameplay videos here.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate a "smash hit"

Playing Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on Wii U GamePad

Capcom recently reported their annual financial results, and they reported profits in net and operating incomes. The company had some interesting comments on game sales, particularly in regards to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, which is known in Japan as Monster Hunter Tri G HD Ver.

Furthermore, "Monster Hunter 3 (Tri) G HD Ver.", which was our first title for the new home video console "Wii U" that was launched in December 2012, also became a smash hit. However, its package sales were generally soft.

Unfortunately, Capcom did not explain what they meant by "package sales." The term could have been referring to physical copies, which would indicate that the digital version was very successful while physical copies were not as popular. Due to the fact that the report was focused primarily on Japan, the term could also have been a reference to the Japan-exclusive Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Wii U Pack, a bundle which includes a Wii U Premium console along with a copy of the popular game.

While Capcom's first Wii U title has been successful, the company did not reveal specific sales figures for any region.

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Ghosts 'n Goblins coming to Wii U Virtual Console

The classic NES title Mega Man has arrived on the North American Wii U Virtual Console, and Capcom is working to bring even more of their great games to the platform. In a post on Capcom-Unity, Senior Online/Community Manager Brett Elston announced that Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts will be available starting on May 16th, while Ghosts 'n Goblins will be released on May 30th.

Both games are side-scrolling platformers which are known for their extremely high difficulty. Players take on the role of knight Arthur as he sets out to rescue damsels in distress. Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts was originally released on the SNES, and is the sequel to the NES title Ghosts 'n Goblins. It seems kind of odd that the second entry in the series is being re-released first, but I suppose it doesn't really matter.

Elston also took the opportunity to announce that more classic Capcom titles are on the way as well.

This is just the beginning, too. We have more titles in the pipeline and will have an update on them as soon as there are more details.
-Brett Elston, Senior Online/Community Manager at Capcom

We already know that Street Fighter II is on the way, as it appeared in the recent Wii U Virtual Console promotional video. It will be interesting to see what else the company has in store for Nintendo fans.

Original Mega Man now available on Wii U Virtual Console

Awesome. Very hard, but awesome.

The original Mega Man game is now available on the Wii U Virtual Console in North America for $4.99, and £3.49 in Europe. This version features Off-TV Play, restore points, and an official Miiverse community. For many players, restore points are a welcome addition to this rather difficult classic, and they will definitely help many gamers finally play through the entire game. If you already downloaded the game on your Wii, you will be able to upgrade for a small fee.

DuckTales Remastered details and possibility of more Capcom-Disney remakes

Screenshot of Scrooge McDuck and treasure chests in DuckTales Remastered

In an interview with Polygon, producer Rey Jimenez shared quite a few details about DuckTales Remastered, and how it will be "modernized" while remaining faithful to the original. Some of the more interesting points are as follows:

-The default difficulty level will be lower
-The game is going to be more accessible to today's gamers
-Maps will be available to help guide players
-The infamous Transylvania level, which had to be played three times, has been reworked to require only one play through.
-An entirely new level will be included, and serves as the final stage
-Almost all of these features can be disabled in the options menu or difficulty setting for those who want to experience a more faithful recreation of the game

Jimenez also said that if the remake is successful, it could open the door for more of Capcom's classic Disney games to be remade in similar fashion. Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers, DuckTales 2, and Darkwing Duck are just a few of the possible candidates to be recreated in HD if all goes well. As for which one might come next, Jimenez had this to say:

In a purely hypothetical world. I think Chip n' Dale would be the next logical one. It makes sense because it's the next in the hierarchy.

Capcom would need permission to re-release classic Disney games in original form

Box art for NES games DuckTales, Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers, and Darkwing Duck

Gamers are excited over the revelation that DuckTales Remastered, a remake of the legendary NES game, is in development, and many are wondering if Capcom will be able to release the game in its original form, along with their other popular Disney games. Unfortunately, it appears that is not the case.

A member of Capcom-Unity asked the company about the prospects of seeing more of their classic Disney games on the Virtual Console, and corporate officer/senior vice-president Christian Svensson replied that the agreement is only for DuckTales Remastered.

Question: Is it now possible for Capcom to release their old Disney games on Virtual Console?

Svensson: At the moment, sadly no. Our agreement with Disney is just for Duck Tales in its new form. It does not allow us to rerelease these other projects on new platforms.
Sorry.

Capcom have announced they are working on a side-scrolling four-player brawler called Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, which is coming to the Wii U eShop, Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC via Steam. It will be priced at $15.

The game is a collection of two D&D arcade titles: Tower of Doom and Shadow Over Mystara, which were released as arcade games by Capcom years ago. Players can complete in-game challenges to earn experience points and Vault points, which allows players to unlike items like character art. In addition, gamers can alter the experience with customizable house rules.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Video Review by IGN

Title screen of Wii U version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

The flow of Wii U games may have slowed to a trickle over the past two months, but things are starting to pick up. Capcom's Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is easily one of the biggest titles of March, and it is scheduled for release in North America today, March 19th, and in Europe on Friday, March 22nd.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Ultimate, it is an enhanced version of the Wii exclusive Monster Hunter Tri. Here's an official description from a recent press release:

Take up arms and venture into a world of spectacular surroundings and challenging monsters in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. With all-new monsters, equipment and weapons and over 200 action-packed quests to tackle, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is the most expansive game in the series to date. In this action RPG, take more than just satisfaction from your hard-fought victories: carve conquered monsters to gain their bones, horns, hides and more, then have them fashioned into weapons and armour to steel you for the even tougher battles ahead. It is the hunter's way.

IGN has posted their video review of the game, and in spite of a few shortcomings, they are impressed. Video after the break.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate app allows 3DS players to go online via Wii U. Will be available in Europe.

Screenshot of Monster Hunter Ultimate 3, video game for Wii U and 3DS

The 3DS version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate only supports local multiplayer, but an application known as the Packet Relay Tools was recently launched in Japan which allows gamers to take the hunt online via the Wii or Wii U LAN Adapter. Nintendo has now confirmed that the app will be coming to Europe as well, and will be available to download from the eShop on March 22nd, the European launch day for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Here's the official word from the Big N:

We can confirm that on March 22nd, the launch day of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, an application named MONSTER HUNTER 3 ULTIMATE Packet Relay Tools for Nintendo 3DS will be made available as a free download on the Nintendo eShop on Wii U.

This application allows players of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on Nintendo 3DS to play the game online by using a Wii U console connected to the Internet via the Wii LAN Adapter or Wii U LAN Adapter (to be sold separately). Using this set-up, one Nintendo 3DS system can connect to the Wii U console, and play Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate online with other players.

Please note that while the Wii U console is providing this function for the Nintendo 3DS system, it is not possible to simultaneously use the Wii U console for playing Wii U software or to connect locally to another Nintendo 3DS system. A copy of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for Wii U is not required.

Nintendo has not confirmed if the Packet Relay Tools will be released in North America. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate has been available in Japan since December 10th, 2012, and is scheduled for release in North America on March 19th, 2013.

Capcom explains why Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate doesn't support Off-TV Play

Playing Wii U version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate with Pro Controller

In an interview with Joystiq, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate producer Ryozo Tsujimoto revealed that the Wii U version of the game will not support off-TV play. Tsujimoto explained that the game is meant to be played with two screens, hence the lack of the feature.

We don't have that feature within Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate – really, the way that we approach making the title for the Wii U was that we wanted to make the Wii U GamePad subscreen a compliment to the main screen. So instead of making the screens replaceable or being able to switch them, we really wanted to make sure that players are utilizing both real estate of the screens, in conjunction with each other.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate servers will be region-locked

Screenshot of multiplayer in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for Wii U

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate has been on sale in Japan for a few months, and will soon be released in the rest of the world. If you were hoping to connect with friends from around the globe, this might come as a disappointment: the servers for the game will be region-locked, meaning you will only be able to play online with other players who live in your territory.

As you can imagine, Capcom-Unity members have responded negatively to the announcement. Capcom community specialist Yuri Araujo, who is known for being quite a Monster Hunter fan, is not happy with the news either. He made a post on the site, telling users that he has heard their complaints and will "pass it along" to others within the company.

I’m not thrilled with the servers being split either… I am definitely aware of the demand and feedback, not only in this thread, but also from threads before finding out these bad news; so be sure that I will pass it along.

There is no guarantee this will change though. =/
