Wii U requires update to play Wii games

Wii U console and controller

IGN is reporting that the Wii U will not be able to play Wii games right out of the box. When they tried playing Wii games on the console, they received a message saying an update is needed first. This means owners will have to connect to the Internet and download the update to enable backwards compatibility with Wii games. While the update is going to be ready on launch day, this is still unexpected news. There is no word yet on how Wii U owners will be able to install the update if they don't have an Internet connection.
