Reggie says Miiverse will be one of Wii U's killer apps

Reggie says Nintendo's new social network will prove to be one of the system's killer apps.

In a recent interview, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime gave a number of statements touching on some of the Wii U's most-hyped features. In regards to Miiverse, he said he believes it will be one of the system's killer apps.

Reggie: “I think that it will pleasantly surprise people. As the network grows and the installed base grows, it will prove to be a true killer application for the system, and I say this loving what we have done with Nintendo TVii and loving all the games. Until you try it and experience it, you may not totally understand it.”

“People have to leave the current paradigm behind to understand what we are trying to do. Miiverse is going to be embedded right on the game platform, so literally some of the activity will be able to happen immediately as people experience it.”

Judging from the following statement, he seems to think that the Wii U will be the go-to device for many owners, as it allows them to surf the net, watch TV, and interact with other people via Miiverse, making it the centerpiece of home entertainment.

Reggie: “I compete against time on the PC, time watching TV, and time spent on social networks. I already compete with all that stuff, and now you can do it in a new and engaging way.”

Reggie also emphasized that Nintendo is concerned about protecting children from harmful material when using the Big N's new social network.

Reggie: “...we’ll be leveraging technology, the community and our own reviewers to determine what’s appropriate for the masses. What Miiverse is doing is quite different from anything else that’s being done, especially with the ability to hand draw messages and things of that nature.”

The Nintendo of America president also forecasts that combined sales of Wii and Wii U units will reach the 10 million mark for this year, says there will be more Wii U consoles available on launch day, and reassured everyone that the company is "looking to max out production as quickly as possible."
