According to Nintendojo, a game producer at Disney Interactive has confirmed that it will not be possible to play Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two on the Wii U GamePad alone. The developer really wanted to make it possible to do so, but the feature had to be omitted due to time constraints.
Interestingly, Nintendojo says only the GamePad can be used to play single player, as Wii Remote and Nunchuk support is only available for player two. If you prefer the control style of the original, it looks like you'll have to go with the Wii version. Three gameplay videos after the break.
