Wii U Premium console and GamePad controller

Nintendo of America has issued a press release which reveals the latest U.S. sales figures for the Wii U. Over 460,000 units were sold in December, bringing the nationwide total to "nearly 890,000 units in the United States after only 41 days on the market." The release states that "hardware sales have generated more than $300 million in the U.S. alone." For reference, the Wii "had generated more than $270 million at the same point in its lifecycle."

Another interesting fact worth noting is that U.S. sales of New Super Mario Bros. U total more than 580,000 units, "an attach rate of more than 65 percent." There were a lot of other figures thrown in regarding the 3DS, Wii, and DS as well. Here's a quick breakdown:

December sales (U.S. only)

3DS -1.25 million units (7.7 million units to date)
Wii - 475,000 units (40.8 million units to date)
DS - 470,000 units (53 million units to date)
