Ubisoft and WayForward Technologies have revealed that they are working on The Smurfs 2, a multiplatform game based on the upcoming film of the same name. It is coming to the Wii U, Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in July 2013.
While most licensed games turn out poorly, there is hope for this one when you consider who's working on it. As you may already be aware, WayForward is the company behind Contra 4, Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition, and the upcoming HD remake of DuckTales. The first two in that list were great 2D sidescrollers, and DuckTales Remastered is looking pretty good as well. Ubisoft, on the other hand, are well known for their Rayman games, including the critically acclaimed Rayman Origins and the upcoming Rayman Legends. Considering the track records these two companies, it will be interesting to see how this one turns out.
The Smurfs 2 looks as though it will follow the storyline of the movie, allowing players to roam around the titular characters village before heading to Paris and New York. There will also be some areas that don't appear to have any basis on the film, including the Arctic Tundra and the Lava Jungle.
Multiplayer has been confirmed, which allows four gamers to play together co-operatively. The Wii U version will allow a fifth player to take part via the GamePad, playing as Clockwork Smurf. This asymmetric gameplay sounds reminiscent of the multiplayer experience that can be found in New Super Mario Bros. U and Rayman Legends.
There will be 30 levels featured in the platformer which are divided into six different worlds. As players progress, they will unlock nine different playable Smurfs, each of whom has their own unique ability.

OMG I am so buying a Wii-U to,play this game...ok i'm not I alreday have one but wayforward does know how to make these style games and the humor and different smurfs abilities could make for a creative game.....yhis promo is compelling and the 3d rendered scenes look fabulous baby!
