Wii U shifts 3.45 million units worldwide, misses goal of 4 million
According to a financial statement released by Nintendo this morning, the Wii U has sold 3.45 million units worldwide as of March 31st, a figure that falls short of the 4 million projected by the company in January. That number had been revised from initial forecasts of 5.5 million after sales dropped in the New Year.
Nintendo states that the console failed to "maintain initial sales momentum" due to the delay of several key titles, most likely referring to Pikmin 3 among others. The company is hoping that the release of "key Nintendo titles" in the second half of 2013 will jumpstart sales of the console. They have projected 9 million units sold for the current fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014.
Nintendo's fiscal year net profits for the financial year came in at 7 billion yen ($71 million), half of their projected 14 billion. They posted an operating loss of 36.4 billion yen ($366 million), making this their second consecutive annual loss.
Here's a breakdown of their hardware and software sales:
3DS
● 31.09 million units shipped (up over 1 million in last quarter)

Wii U
● 3.45 million units shipped
