New Super Mario Bros. U will have a more challenging mode

Boost Rush mode in New Super Mario Bros. U
Boost Rush mode, not to be confused with Boost Mode.

One of the most common complaints about modern video games, including the 2D Marios, is that they are too easy. Nintendo seems to have heard these complaints, and they have included a new feature, Boost Mode, in New Super Mario Bros. U. Boost Rush mode will set each level on autoscroll, forcing players to keep up with the camera or die trying. Super Mario Bros. 3 used autoscroll to great effect in many of its levels, making for some truly challenging levels. The second half of World 5 had a number of these stages, and World 8, Bowser's homeland, consisted almost entirely of autoscrolling levels. Seriously, how many tank and ship levels were there that forced you to keep moving?

Anyway, this latest information comes from the new edition of Game Informer, which is offering up a ton of info about the upcoming Wii U games. If you consider yourself to be an expert gamer, Boost Rush Mode should be right up your alley.

Some sites, including MyNintendoNews, seem to have mixed up Boost Rush Mode with Boost Mode. The latter refers to the multiplayer mode which allows one player to create temporary blocks for assisted platforming as well as stun enemies with a few taps of the GamePad's touchscreen. You can see a two-part video demonstration of Boost Mode after the break.
