Ubisoft designer says Wii U has enormous memory, is perfect for 2D games

A NeoGAF user has posted a rough translation of what Ubisoft designer Michael Ancel said about the Wii U in a recent interview, and it is almost entirely praise. He said the Wii U is like "a whole new cooking recipe, you have to taste it." He believes the console is meant for "core" gamers, bringing "new tools to players, while retaining what they already had. He also said the "multi layer" approach of the new controller, with its touchscreen and joysticks, will ultimately be what creates the value of the system.

Ancel then moved on to Rayman Legends, and says that because of the Wii U's features, it's "like there is a level designer that changes the playfield in realtime." He is very pleased with the amount of memory the console has, saying the Wii U has "almost no limitations in terms of memory," which makes the console perfectly suited to play 2D games, which use a lot of memory for textures and the like. For Ansel, the Wii U "is a surprising machine, which can display full HD on the main screen while streaming a different image at 800x480 on the tablet, and keeping a 60 i/s framerate" while doing so. The designer also commented that he loves how the Wii U opens LAN possibilities.

In spite of all the praise, the industry veteran said that while the Wii U is powerful, it isn't a traditional next-gen system in terms of graphics, and isn't sure if the console would be able handle a proper version of his highly-anticipated Beyond Good & Evil 2.

With each passing day, insiders reveal more and more about the Wii U, and for the most part, it is positive.  The Wii missed out on a lot of good titles as many developers decided not to port Xbox 360 and PS3 titles to the console as too much would have to be sacrificed in the process. Ancel's assessment that the console is not a "traditional next-gen" system is somewhat troubling, and echo Capcom's assessment that the Wii U is not a true next-gen console. Here's hoping the big N's system will be up to the task.
