In a phone interview with CNET, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime revealed that Wii U sales have reached 400,000 units just one week after launch. Reggie explained that Wii U sales were capped by Nintendo's ability to get enough units on store shelves.
"Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenish stock. Retailers are doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they're selling out immediately."
For reference, Nintendo said that 600,000 Wii consoles were sold in its first eight days when it launched in November of 2006, and the system continuously sold out well into 2009. While the Wii U is definitely doing well, Reggie doesn't exactly expect the new console to match the incredible success of its predecessor.
"Wii was a unique phenomenon. You couldn't walk into a retailer and buy a Wii until spring of 2009. We've certainly learned many lessons from that and we are replenishing retailers more quickly this time around. We are looking to have as much product into retail as possible. It's driven by consumer response."
