| Nintendo's raking it in. |
Nintendo may have suffered their first annual loss in years, but things are looking up for the big N. Japanese consumers purchased 584,000 copies of New Super Mario Bros 2, and 557,000 copies of the Wii version of Dragon Quest X were sold to the eager public. Here are the top ten companies by sales for the period between July 30th to August 26th:
1. Nintendo: 28.5%
2. Square Enix: 26.0%
3. Namco Bandai: 14.8%
4. Pokemon: 5.3%
5. Konami: 3.2%
6. Capcom 3%
7. Atlus
8. Spike Chunsoft
9. Nihon Columbia
10. Ubisoft
Just a few things worth noting. For one, the Pokemon Company is an affiliate of Nintendo and is, in fact, owned by the big N. When you take that into consideration, Nintendo's month looks even more impressive with 33.8% of software sales. Also, Square Enix's Dragon Quest X is doing very well for a late Wii game, showing that the console isn't completely dead yet. It will be interesting to see how many companies continue to develop for the aging platform as opposed to the Wii U, given its large install base (almost 100 million units sold worldwide). Sony's PlayStation 3 games were outsold by PlayStation 2 games for quite some time, and Nintendo might see a similar pattern with their respective consoles.
The sales of Dragon Quest X are further testimony to the quality of the MMORPG, and we will finally get to see the enhanced Wii U version running in its HD glory one and a half weeks from now. Wii U Only will be covering its Tokyo Games Show reveal, you can count on that.
